Singapore has become warmer in recent years as a result of the so-called Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. Reducing this effect, and so improving the thermal comfort will require the combined effort from many stakeholders from government, academia and private sector.

external page Cooling Singapore is a inter-disciplinary collaborative project led by the Singapore-ETH Centre, with NUS, Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), and TUM CREATE, that aims to tackle UHI. The project is supported by the National Research Foundation under its CREATE programme. It seeks to develop roadmaps to coordinate long-term UHI mitigation efforts and UHI-related R&D activities. It also seeks to establish a local UHI task force to facilitate an exchange of knowledge between the various stakeholders.

This is a matter important not just for Singapore but for all large cities, and Singapore could be the first city in the world to come up with a coherent strategy for tackling what is a very general problemProf Dr Peter Edwards, lead principal investigator
