How to Tai Tai 101

The end of 2020 is approaching with not much improvement in the area of air travel. What can we do to spend our off-days in Singapore?

The first question you probably have upon reading the title is: what/who is a Tai Tai?

The Chinese term "Tai Tai" generally refers to the privileged wife of a wealthy man. The Tai Tai is usually is unemployed (she really has no reason to work) and spends her days leisurely with lots of time and money on her hands. As 2020 draws to a close and we rush to clear our accumulated annual leave, let us look at how we too can while away the weekdays when on leave à la Tai Tai.

Fundamentally, Tai Tais like to spend their time pampering themselves. When it comes to self-care, the possibilities are endless. For a relaxing day out, you could head for a spa, which boasts a range of services for both men and women. A relaxing back massage might be what you need to ease the tension from hunching over your devices all day long.

Good food makes people happy - it is a universal truth. On your day off, beat the weekend crowd and treat yourself to brunch or high-tea at your favourite cafe. You may have a list of restaurants and cafes that you have always wanted to visit - now is the time to do it!

Being cooped up at home can really be tough on the mind. With near-empty malls on weekdays, retail therapy could be the balm to your soul. Online shopping may be very convenient but it cannot beat the excitement that comes with window shopping. Take a leisurely stroll through Ion Orchard, Vivo City, Paya Lebar Quarter, or the new Funan mall among many others. Embrace the life of a Tai Tai one shop at a time.

2021 is approaching quickly and mass air travel is not expected to resume for some time to come. As we yearn to spend our days vacationing on a sunny beach or snowy mountain, we can also use our imagination in other ways. Live like a Tai Tai, think like a Tai Tai. Maybe, just don't spend like one!
