Can a meeting also double up as a picnic in the park? Dr Devisari Tunas shares her experience of participating in small-group FCL meetings outdoors.

Five people sit on a mat amidst the lush greenery. They are casually dressed in loose shirts and shorts, and sporting panama hats to match. With coffee thermoses and drinks in their hands, they are seemingly having a picnic. A closer look however, would reveal several laptops and notebooks. This is how our weekly meetings look like these days.

Gone are the days where we huddled together in air-conditioned meeting rooms surrounded by concrete walls. While virtual meetings remain the main mode of communication, increasing digital fatigue has inspired us to go towards ‘nature’ as much as we could, where we can enjoy fresh air, surround ourselves with Singapore’s rich greenery, and relax our screen-wary eyes. We have been re-discovering various parks around the island, starting from the Singapore Botanic Gardens, West Coast park and Hort park.

Some of our meeting essentials include: laptop/tablet, smart phone, good internet connection, phone holder/tripod, earphones, face mask, drinks, snacks, hand sanitizer, mosquito repellent, hat, sunglasses, umbrella, frisbee (to wind down!), folding chair (not shown in the picture). Also, during our meetings, we ensure a safe distance of 1 meter apart from each other, and of course wear face masks at all times when we are not drinking/eating.
