SEC signs MoU with the Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC)

Signed on 4 October, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the SEC and CLC will focus on knowledge-sharing and capability building.

On 4 October, the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) and the external pageCentre for Liveable Cities (CLC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on knowledge sharing and capability building.

Signed jointly by CLC’s Executive Director, CLC Ltd, Hugh Lim and Vice President for Research, ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr Christian Wolfrum, as co-chair of the SEC’s Governing Board, the MoU signing was witnessed by witnessed by Minister for National Development (MND) of Singapore, Desmond Lee, at the sidelines of the MND’s Urban Solutions & Sustainability R&D Congress.

The scope of the MoU includes:

  1. Capability development and training programmes
    It will help establish deeper collaborations for capability building on the application of the Science of Cities in the urban planning and governance domain.

  2. Knowledge creation and knowledge sharing
    The MoU will enable both parties to share knowledge, experience, tools, and methodologies on platforms such as at the biennial World Cities Summit, Science of Cities Symposium, and other workshops and conferences. This includes the co-curated panel on 'Regenerative Cities' and the Urban Science Workshop series, both of which are being held as part of this congress, from 26 September to 6 October 2023.

  3. Academic and Professional Networking
    The MoU will also allow government agencies in the MND family and partners of ETH Zurich and SEC to leverage each other’s academic and professional networks to connect with experts globally, and tap on subject matter experts to create and share new knowledge on the Science of Cities approach to support liveable and sustainable cities.

The Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) was set up in 2008 by the Ministry of National Development and the then-Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources with the aim of to distilling, creating and sharing knowledge on liveable and sustainable cities. 

SEC has collaborated with CLC in several projects in the past, focusing on urban planning and design, and resilience. Examples include the ‘Urban Development Towards a Smart Nation Vision’ programme, organised by CLC and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for leaders of city departments from South and Southeast Asian cities, in 3-7 February 2020, and three-month collaborative qualitative study, with the Future Resilient Systems (FRS) programme, on October 2019, to understand the current state of community resilience at Cambridge Road, Singapore.
