Trees and shrubs to bring down temperatures

Vegetation can bring temperatures down as much as 6°C in Singapore. Prof. Peter Edwards explains how on ChannelNews Asia.

Through innovations such as modelling tools, Singapore is trying to identify where to best grow and conserve mangroves and trees, and which species are most effective in stemming sea level rise and global warming.

On 26 December 2019, Prof. Peter Edwards, principal investigator of the Ecosystem Services in Urban Landscapes and Natural Capital Singapore projects, introduced the research done by the Singapore-ETH Centre to cool down rising temperatures in Singapore on ChannelNews Asia. Specifically, a modelling tool which analyses the impact of trees and scrubs in bringing down temperatures in Singapore.

Prof. Edwards mentioned that “it's a matter of placing the trees, so that they shade particularly tarmac surfaces and concrete surfaces, which tend to get very hot, but also making sure that by planting trees we don't stop important channels of wind flowing, also using tree species which we know are particularly good for cooling.”

The findings from the Natural Capital Singapore project will be shared with National Parks Board and the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore.
