This Natural Capital Singapore Seminar will feature Dr Chong Kwek Yan, a plant ecologist at the National University of Singapore.

Greenery as resource enrichment for urban wildlife: what are the effects?

As cities and towns expand into peri-urban areas or become increasingly dense, vegetation is cleared to make way for concrete and asphalt. If the loss of greenery leads to loss of wildlife, will putting back greenery bring back the biodiversity? Is planting lots of trees and shrubs that provide food for animals such as birds and butterflies a good idea?

Dr Chong will present his assessment of the evidence from several of his past and on-going projects, ranging from whole-community surveys of parks and individual trees, to studies of specific individual host plant-herbivorous insect population demographic processes.
